Conquering the Fear of Engaging

By Kora Stinson

When you have a conversation, how often do you talk about spiritual or political issues? Unfortunately, a lot of us are afraid to speak about these things for fear of rejection or heated arguments. If I share the gospel, what if they don’t like me anymore? If I talk about abortion will they shy away? These are common questions that often halt a person from speaking up and speaking the truth.

As Christians, we need to conquer this fear and engage friends, family, and even strangers. We must speak up, defend the helpless, and speak God’s truth. Fear can be conquered, but we have to be able and willing to fight it. Lives and souls are at risk; it is our job to conquer fear and passionately speak truth. But how do we do it? How do we conquer fear and work to save lives and souls?

The definition of fear according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is “an unpleasant often strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger.” Danger of being rejected, shunned, judged, etc. easily fall into this. These dangers are real and you will probably experience them often as you engage the world. As humans it is natural to fear danger and the people who inflict it.  But who do you fear more: man or God? God says that abortion (since it is murder) is a terrible sin and that he will judge the world for its sin. The world says that abortion is healthy, good, and freeing and by saying this it rejects God. God will judge. It is far wiser to fear and obey Him, rather then to fear and obey the world. Danger on earth is far better than danger for eternity.

This truth provides us with great motivation to fight against abortion (which God hates) and share the gospel with others, so that, Lord willing, they will not have to face God’s eternal judgment. Even with this great motivation to engage we will still struggle with fear, but if we turn to God, He will help us conquer our fear and will help us fight for the lives and souls of His children, whom He loves.

2 Timothy 1:7-8 says “For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control. Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God.” We must turn to God when we are afraid of sharing the gospel and engaging people on the terrible topic of abortion. He will help us engage. He will help us protect His children and conquer our fears. So go out into the world and engage with others.  Fight for life; fight for souls!
